SEOUL, South Korea — Several hundred students at Seoul National University staged a violent demonstration Friday to protest the arrest of a student leader.
Witnesses said the violence was sparked by a police decision Thursday to arrest Sohn Yong Jin, 22, vice president of the university’s student association, for anti-government activities.
Police said more than 4,000 youths at 16 universities and colleges in Seoul and major provincial cities staged anti-government campus demonstrations.
At least 42 students were arrested and 107 policemen were injured in the disturbances.
