McHargue Rides Watch For Dawn to Victory in Oak Tree Feature
Longshot Watch For Dawn, ridden by Darrel McHargue, rallied through the stretch to win the $31,000 Oak Tree feature race for older horses Thursday at Santa Anita.
The 4-year-old colt finished three-quarters of a length in front of Val De Song, ridden by Alex Solis. Plenty Conscious, ridden by Bill Shoemaker, finished third, another 1 lengths back.
Watch For Dawn, who won for the first time in 11 starts this year, defeated seven rivals and earned a winner’s purse of $16,500 in the race for 3-year-olds and up.
Watch For Dawn, who paid $58.60 to win, was clocked in 1:49 for 1 1/8 miles on a firm turf course.
Carrying 116 pounds, Watch For Dawn moved up along the rail on the final turn, drove between horses with 200 yards to run and finished strongly.
