Seven Refugee Center Guards Beaten When Trying to Halt Fight
United Press International
MIAMI — Seven guards who tried to break up a fight between a Haitian and a Cuban refugee were pinned against a fence, kicked and beaten Thursday by 100 inmates at the Krome Avenue detention camp.
The guards, who suffered only minor scrapes and bruises, escaped through a hole in the fence, and 60 Border Patrol agents calmed the inmates “with a display of force,” Perry Rivkind of the Immigration and Naturalization Service said.
Fifteen refugees were arrested for assault and inciting a disturbance and were placed in isolation.
