Reagan Again Pronounces Self ‘100%’ Well After Checkup

BETHESDA, Md. — President Reagan, who announced six weeks ago that his recovery from cancer surgery was “100% complete,” repeated that statement today after he was examined at Bethesda Naval Hospital in what the White House called a routine post-operative visit.
After a half-hour stop at the military hospital, where he said, “They just examined me,” Reagan left by helicopter for a weekend at Camp David, the presidential retreat in the Maryland mountains.
Asked by reporters waiting outside the hospital if he was still 100% recovered after his second post-operative visit to Bethesda, the President replied, “100%” and nodded his head vigorously.
The White House press office said the President’s checkup included an abdominal examination, X-ray and blood tests. Frequent follow-up examinations to catch any recurrence of cancer are recommended by most specialists in the field.
The White House has refused to discuss details of Reagan’s health since he returned from the military hospital outside Washington after a malignant tumor and two-foot section of his colon were removed July 13.
