China denied that it has offered nuclear help to Iran and South Africa, and it stressed that its nuclear contacts with Pakistan are for peaceful purposes. A Foreign Ministry statement, responding to charges by Sen. Alan Cranston (D-Calif.) and others, said, “Our cooperation in the field of nuclear energy with other countries, such as France, (West) Germany, the United States, Brazil, Pakistan and Japan, whether ongoing or under discussion, serves and will serve only peaceful purposes instead of any non-peaceful purposes.”
