Soccer Roundup : Gulls Tie UCLA on Bekraoui’s Goal

SAN DIEGO — Rachid El Bekraoui scored on a header with five minutes left Wednesday as USIU tied fourth-ranked UCLA, 1-1, in a Southwest Conference match at UCLA. Bekraoui’s goal, assisted by Gary Vandermoler and Jeff Ward, was the only shot the Gulls managed in the match.
UCLA’s Doug Swanson scored on a penalty kick at the 11-minute mark to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead. USIU is 2-0-1 in conference and 8-3-2 overall.
In other Southwest Conference action:
USD 3, UC Irvine 2--Jeff Silver’s second goal of the match with four minutes remaining lifted the Toreros past the Anteaters at USD.
Silver took a pass from Bo Kaemmerle and beat UC Irvine goalie Victor Flores with a long shot from the left side. Both schools scored twice in the first half with USD tying the match, 2-2, on a goal by Kaemmerly, USD’s leading scorer, 30 seconds before halftime.
In nonconference action:
San Diego State 4, Westmont 0--Steve Boardman scored one goal and assisted on two others to lead the Aztecs (5-5-2) past Westmont in Aztec Bowl. Tim Homan scored twice and Keenan Mikal had one goal and SDSU goalkeeper Garry Wilcox recorded his fifth shutout.
