Billy Martin, who nearly took the New York Yankees to the American League’s East Division title in his fourth stint as manager of the club, may be on the verge of being fired again.
Owner George Steinbrenner said in a statement that he was assigning the decision on next season’s manager to General Manager Clyde King and Vice President Woody Woodward.
The statement also said that Steinbrenner would not renegotiate Martin’s contract, which has two years remaining, and that Martin was free to negotiate with any other club.
Steinbrenner criticized Martin for his actions in two barroom altercations at the Cross Keys Motel in Baltimore Sept. 21-22.
