Reagan Backs Officials in Recall
HONOLULU — President Reagan has filmed a television ad endorsing three Honolulu city Council members who face recall elections because they jumped from the Democratic Party to the GOP, Republican officials said.
The ad was produced by the National Republican Committee in Washington.
The defections shifted the balance of power on the council and marked the first time in 45 years that Honolulu had both a Republican mayor and a Republican majority on the council.
The Democratic Party obtained enough signatures on petitions to force the recall elections. Special elections will be held if any of the three are recalled.
