Michael Westphal defeated Tomas Smid, 6-8, 1-6, 7-5, 11-9, 17-15, in 5 hours 29 minutes Friday to give West Germany a 2-0 lead over Czechoslovakia in the semifinals of its World Zone Davis Cup playoff at Frankfurt.
Earlier, Wimbledon champion Boris Becker defeated Miloslav Mecir in 1 hour 44 minutes, 6-3, 7-5, 6-4.
The Westphal-Smid match was the second longest in Davis Cup history--one game short of the record 86 games played by Arthur Ashe of the United States and Christian Kuncke of West Germany in 1970.
At Malmo, Sweden, the Swedish team, as expected, took a 2-0 lead over Australia after victories by Mats Wilander and Anders Jarryd.
Wilander beat Wally Masur, 6-1, 6-1, 6-0, in 83 minutes, while Jarryd needed 3 hours 12 minutes to overcome Peter McNamara, 6-4, 6-4, 13-11.
Second-seeded Steffi Graf of West Germany and third-seeded Bonnie Gadusek advanced to the semifinals in a $150,000 women’s tournament at Fort Lauderdale, Fla., as Graf defeated Stephanie Rehe, 7-5, 4-6, 6-2, and Gadusek beat Dianne Fromholtz Balestrat of Australia, 6-3, 6-4.
