Local News in Brief : Veto Kills Plan for Campus Job Centers
- Share via
Gov. George Deukmejian on Thursday vetoed a bill that would have established a job placement program at 25 community college campuses.
The bill, sponsored by Assemblyman Alister McAlister (D-Fremont), could have helped fill a void left when eight Los Angeles Community College District job-placement centers--including ones at Pierce, Valley and Mission colleges--were forced to close because of budget cuts.
Under the bill, 25 community colleges would have been selected to participate in a three-year pilot project. Supporters of the bill said that three or four of the centers likely would have been on Los Angeles campuses.
