Two Officials Will Speak at Child Care Center Rites

Lt. Gov. Leo T. McCarthy and Pleasanton Mayor Kenneth Mercer are scheduled to speak on Monday at a ground-breaking ceremony in Pleasanton for what is being touted as “the absolute best in corporate-funded child care facilities.”

The $2.6-million facilities are being built at Hacienda Business Park, which is in the East Bay’s Tri-Valley Region about halfway between San Francisco and the Silicon Valley, and the start-up costs will be funded by Prudential Insurance Co. of America and Callahan-Pentz Properties, co-developers of the business park. Callahan-Pentz is donating the land, and Prudential is paying for construction of the facility. Child-care costs to parents will be subsidized through an assessment to the businesses in the business park.

Purposes of the new facility are “to supply on-site child care for the employees of Northern California’s largest business park and to minimize the business park’s impact on existing local child-care programs.”

The facility was designed by the San Francisco architectural firm of Fee & Munson with assistance from the International Child Resource Institute in Berkeley. When completed, the facility will accommodate 200 children from infants through 5 years of age. It will have built-in observation rooms with one-way glass for international academic study.

It will also have a lounge for the staff with patio, showers and a changing area.
