Italy to Build Bridge to Sicily
ROME — Italy plans to build the world’s longest suspension bridge, to link Sicily and the Italian mainland, the Rome newspaper Il Messaggero said today.
The span would be 10,800 feet long, more than double the 4,260-foot length of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge in New York City--the longest existing suspension bridge.
The government has commissioned several studies over the last decade. The newspaper quoted Transportation Minister Claudio Signorile as saying the state-run railroad and state-run highway company will sign a preliminary agreement with a consortium of construction firms by October.
Transportation Ministry spokesman Umberto Cutolo confirmed Signorile’s statements.
The newspaper quoted Signorile as saying the bridge will take as long as eight years to build, with construction beginning in 1988.
