Beekeeper David Knoefler was charged with violating a state “killer bee” quarantine by transporting about 240 bee boxes out of Kern County to Riverside on Aug. 7. Kern County Deputy Dist. Atty. Jeri Voge said Knoefler faces a maximum penalty of six months in jail and a $1,000 fine on each of three misdemeanor counts. The quarantine was set up to prevent the spread of Africanized bees, whose first U.S. colony was found in a Lost Hills oil field on June 26. Five other swarms have been discovered since.
