Ailment Will Keep East Out of Senate for Weeks

WASHINGTON — Sen. John P. East, suffering from hypothyroidism, said Wednesday that his physical condition has not improved and that he will not be returning to the Senate for several more weeks.
The North Carolina Republican said flatly that he will not resign but that he has not decided whether to seek reelection next year.
