La Mesa police said Wednesday that a man who hanged himself in a holding cell was wanted for drunk driving and for desertion from the Naval Training Center at San Diego.
Rod White, 22, was cited Monday for having expired license plate tags and was taken to the police station for questioning after he gave police a false name. Shortly afterward, he was found hanging from a noose he had fashioned from his shirt, police said.
Police later matched him with two warrants for drunk driving and one for Navy desertion. Lt. Cmdr. Chris Baumann, a Naval Training Center spokesman, said White had been in boot camp about four weeks before twice leaving the base, the second time permanently.
