An Orange County Jail inmate who had undergone surgery for a possible bleeding ulcer died at UCI Medical Center, a spokesman for the Sheriff’s Department said. David Frank Aguilar, 36, of La Habra died at 5:31 p.m. Tuesday in the hospital’s intensive care unit, where he had been in “guarded condition” since his surgery Sunday, Lt. Dick Olson said. The death is being investigated by the Orange County district attorney’s office, Olson said. Aguilar was admitted to the county’s main jail on July 5 to serve a 270-day sentence for being under the influence of a controlled substance. The inmate remained in the main jail facility in downtown Santa Ana until July 31, Olson said, “at which time the jail medical staff sent him to UCI Medical Center for treatment for a possible bleeding ulcer.” Olson said the exact cause of death will not be known pending an autopsy, which was tentatively scheduled for today.
