300 Whales Beached; 75 Die

From Reuters

About 300 pilot whales ran aground on Great Barrier Island near Auckland and 75 died on the beach. The rest were driven back to sea today by the island’s inhabitants.

“Nobody went to work today. Practically the entire population of the northern end of the island was in the water (guiding out survivors),” said islander Sid Davies, whose 5-year-old son Kurtis discovered the whales.
