GEORGETOWN, Guyana — Forbes Burnham, Guyana’s Socialist president since independence from Britain in 1966, died today of heart failure while undergoing minor throat surgery. He was 62.
He was immediately succeeded by Prime Minister Desmond Hoyte, the Caribbean news agency CANA said. Diplomatic sources said Burnham was a diabetic with a history of heavy drinking and had been to Cuba and other Eastern Bloc nations several times in recent years for medical care.
