Thousands of peace demonstrators have gathered in Washington for a march today in which they plan to encircle the Capitol, Pentagon and Lincoln Memorial with a 15-mile-long “peace ribbon” marking the 40th anniversary of the nuclear blast at Hiroshima. The ribbon will be made up of 25,000 individual strips of yard-wide tapestries made by senior citizens, Scout groups and church groups worldwide. The ribbon is the brainchild of Denver grandmother Justine Merritt, who called it “a gentle reminder” to the government of the danger of nuclear war.
