Amnesty International accused Turkey of “widespread and systematic” torture of political prisoners and said it has new evidence of torture by electric shock, burnings and hangings. The London-based human rights group released a report, “Turkey: Testimony on Torture,” based on what it said were thousands of prisoner reports from the early 1970s to May, 1985. The report said that in view of the “solid evidence of torture over the years, the Turkish government should act now to stop it.”
