Five men were hospitalized and 13 other people suffered minor injuries when a fire destroyed the Santa Clara Hotel in Alameda. Walter Huges, 70, was reported in critical condition with burns at Alameda Hospital. Another hotel resident fractured his ankles when he jumped from a second-story window. The two-alarm blaze probably started in the furnace room of the old wood frame building, Alameda Fire Department Lt. Steven McKinley said.
