Sportfishing for king salmon will be banned on Mondays and Tuesdays next month by the state Fish and Game Department in a move designed to reduce the take of salmon between Shelter Cove and the Oregon border and thus allow a greater run up the Klamath River. Fishermen viewed the action as a better alternative than other plans under consideration, including cutting the daily bag limit from two salmon to one, restricting anglers to silver and pink salmon or shutting the season down immediately. Low spawning levels in the Klamath prompted state and federal agencies to ban commercial fishing from Shelter Cove in Humboldt County to Cape Blanco, Ore.
