House OKs Bill to Compile Statistics on Hate Crimes

WASHINGTON — The House, by voice vote, passed legislation Monday that would require the Justice Department to collect information on hate crimes and publish it annually.
The bill, sent to the Senate, seeks to deal with such crimes as church and synagogue desecrations and cross burnings. Witnesses told a House Judiciary subcommittee that such crimes are growing but that there are no national statistics on the number of such offenses.
