Wheel Injures Driver: A runaway wheel from a southbound tractor-trailer bounced over the median of the Santa Ana Freeway and struck a car going in the opposite direction Monday, causing critical injuries to the driver of the car, the California Highway Patrol reported. After being struck by the wheel about 2:30 p.m. just north of the Euclid Street interchange, the car ran off the road into trees and bushes on the side of the freeway, the CHP said. The driver of the tractor-trailer, who was uninjured, slowed and stopped a few miles down the freeway and then notified police. The car’s driver, whom the CHP did not identify, was taken by ambulance to UCI Medical Center in Orange. The driver was listed in “extremely critical” condition.
