The shooting of two migrant farm workers late Friday in an unincorporated area near Carlsbad remained under investigation Sunday by the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.
According to the department, Mateo Santiago and Silvestre Ventura were found shot shortly after 11:15 p.m. Friday about one mile north of El Camino Real.
Santiago, 30, was shot once in the chest. He was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, where he remained late Sunday in intensive care.
Ventura, 25, was shot twice in the left leg. He was treated at Tri-City Hospital in Oceanside, the Sheriff’s Department said.
Homicide detectives were investigating the attack Sunday and had no suspects, according to the department.
