WASHINGTON — The first teacher to fly in space will be named today at a White House ceremony. The new astronaut will be selected from a pool of six women and four men who have undergone thorough testing by doctors and psychologists.
The winner is booked for a Jan. 22 flight on the shuttle Challenger along with five National Aeronautics and Space Administration astronauts. The primary purpose of the six-day mission is to launch the second big tracking and data relay satellite and a small satellite called Spartan that will study Halley’s comet.
