The Region : Reactor’s Fuel Saving Put at $81 Million

Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant’s Unit 1 has generated $81 million in fuel-cost savings during its first two months of operation, Pacific Gas & Electric Co. officials reported. George Maneatis, P G & E executive vice president, said that oil- and gas-fired plants would have used more than 2.5 million barrels of fuel to produce the same amount of electricity generated by the nuclear power plant. When both Diablo Canyon units are operating at full capacity, they will provide electricity for more than 2 million customers, Maneatis said.
