35 Flee Apartment Fire
Fire spread from a vacant commercial building to a three-story apartment complex southwest of downtown Los Angeles on Tuesday afternoon, causing the evacuation of 35 residents, Fire Department officials said.
The blaze did only $500 damage to the vacant structure at 751 West 10th Place but caused $40,000 damage to the three-story apartment building at 747 West 10th Place, Fire Department spokesman Jim Wells said.
Only two apartment units were damaged by the flames, but the evacuation was made necessary by heavy smoke. There were no injuries, Wells said.
