2 Salvador Groups Say They Killed 4 Marines
San Salvador — Two groups of left-wing guerrillas claimed responsibility Friday for the killings of four U.S. Marines and nine civilians in an armed attack on a San Salvador sidewalk cafe Wednesday night.
In a call to a foreign news agency, a person saying he belonged to the Central American Workers’ Party, one of several guerrilla groups figting the U.S. backed government of President Jose Napoleon Duarte, said its urban commandos had carried out the attack.
And in a statement, the Mardoqueo Cruz Urban Guerrilla Commandos said it conducted the attack.
The claims were made shortly after the bodies of the four Marines were loaded onto a C-130 military cargo transport plane to be flown home to the United States for burial.
