Smith International has established a reserve.
The ailing Newport Beach-based oil-services company set aside $22.8 million to cover possible damages in a 13-year-old patent litigation suit filed by Hughes Tool of Houston. Hughes is seeking $1.2 billion in damages. Smith officials said the reserve will reduce operating earnings by $1 per share in the second quarter ending June 30.
