Times Fund Grants Given 201 Graduates
The Los Angeles Times Fund has awarded $100,500 in grants-in-aid to 201 graduating high school seniors throughout Southern California, enabling them to continue their education in the next school year.
The $500 awards were presented to the seniors at ceremonies at public and parochial schools in Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego counties last week.
The grants-in-aid program, started by the Times Fund in 1967, has awarded more than 5,400 grants totaling more than $2 million. The grants are for attendance at colleges, universities and trade schools.
“The goal of these educational grants-in-aid is to provide needy students with the means and encouragement to pursue their educational goals,” said Tom Johnson, publisher and chief executive officer of the Los Angeles Times and president of the Times Fund.
“These students have demonstrated both a desire to further their education and the determination to succeed. The Times is pleased to be able to help them in their pursuit of excellence.”
The grants-in-aid program is supported by the proceeds of various Times-sponsored events. Two upcoming events are the 40th annual Times/Rams Charity Game on Aug. 10 and the Volvo All-American Tennis Championship at the Los Angeles Tennis Center from Oct. 28 to Nov. 11.
