When Lompoc Cabrillo and Sierra Madre Maranatha play for the Southern Section 1-A high school softball title today at 5 p.m. at Mayfair Park in Lakewood, there will be no question of belonging.
Cabrillo, with a 22-7-1 record, is the top-seeded team, and Maranatha (22-1) is No. 2. These teams are supposed to play for the title.
The Small Schools division, however, is a different story. The top two teams were heading for a showdown until both were upended Tuesday.
So instead of Calabasas Viewpoint, seeded No. 1, playing defending champion Woodcrest Christian of Riverside, seeded No. 2, it will be a battle of unseeded teams. But not no-name teams.
Linfield Christian of Temecula, 20-3 and an upset winner over Viewpoint in the semifinals, and Flintridge Sacred Heart of La Canada, 18-4 and an upset winner over Woodcrest Christian in the semifinals, will play for the title at 2:30.
