Citing Apartheid, Panama Severs Ties With S. Africa

PANAMA CITY — Panama announced Friday that it has severed all diplomatic ties with South Africa because of its policy of apartheid.
The Foreign Ministry issued a statement declaring that Panama consistently has supported U.N. resolutions condemning apartheid and that as a result, “the Panamanian consulate in South Africa was closed in 1984 and on May 23, 1985, the Panamanian government ended consular relations with the country.”
