106 Injured in Train Collision in London
LONDON — An express train carrying airline passengers from Gatwick Airport to London smashed into the rear of a slow-moving commuter train Friday, injuring 106 people, railroad and hospital officials said.
Most of the victims were treated at two hospitals for shock or minor cuts and bruises, hospital spokeswomen said, but 14 were admitted for treatment or observation.
The accident occurred at 9:55 a.m. at Battersea Park Station in south London.
British Rail spokeswoman Sara Bugden said the express train carrying about 150 passengers on the 28-mile run from Gatwick to Victoria Station in central London struck a suburban commuter with 290 passengers aboard.
The airport express was traveling at 40 m.p.h. and the commuter train at about 5 m.p.h., according to rail officials.
