TAFT, Calif. — Mayor Bill Lackey called a special meeting of the City Council at 5 p.m. today to discuss the hazardous waste situation in and around this small Kern County community. A chemical spill and fire west of Taft Tuesday evening forced evacuation of seven homes and closure of a section of Highway 33 for several hours.
Lackey said he wanted the council to take a look at precautions being taken by the city to handle future situations involving hazardous wastes or spills.
