California maintained its No. 1 population ranking among the states by hitting the 25,622,000 mark last July 1, state Finance Director Jesse Huff said. That was almost 8 million more than New York, the No. 2 state. California’s population grew 436,000 over the 1983 figure. Among counties with more than 100,000 population, Los Angeles grew by 91,800, representing the largest numerical increase. Riverside, with a 4.4% growth rate, showed the most rapid increase in population.
