A 31-year-old Newport Beach man was killed Monday when the vehicle he was driving struck a parked car and turned over, crushing him, police said.
Richard James Jenkins was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after the 5:40 p.m. accident, said Newport Beach Police Investigator Rick Bradley.
Bradley said Jenkins was driving north on Galaxy Drive in a 1950 four-wheel drive vehicle with its top down, when the car struck a parked car outside 1848 Galaxy.
Jenkins was partially ejected and his car, which had no roll bar, overturned and pinned him, Bradley said.
An investigation into the accident was continuing Monday night. Bradley said “it looks like he (Jenkins) was going faster than the 25-m.p.h. speed limit” when the accident occurred.
Another parked car, struck by the parked car Jenkins hit, also was damaged in the accident, Bradley said.
