34th Draw in Chess Match
Associated Press
MOSCOW — Challenger Garri Kasparov abandoned efforts to score his second victory in the World Chess Championship led by titlist Anatoly Karpov and conceded today to the match’s 34th draw.
Kasparov had been described as having good chances of winning but was unable to capitalize on his one-pawn advantage and the players finally agreed to a draw after the 70th move. Karpov leads the match with five victories against one for the challenger and needs one more win to retain his title.
