Boys Roundup : Devereux’s Shot Gives Sonora a 49-47 Victory

Dave Devereux hit a six-foot bank shot with nine seconds to play to give Sonora High School a 49-47, nonleague win over La Quinta Friday night at La Quinta, snapping Sonora’s six-game losing streak.
Mike Samuelson had 24 points and 11 rebounds and Devereux contributed 10 points and 11 rebounds to help the Raiders improve their record to 3-6. La Quinta falls to 3-7.
Only two players--Mike Zugates and John Lee--scored for the Aztecs in the second half. La Quinta had a, 33-26, halftime lead but was outscored, 16-8 in the third quarter.
Zugates was 10 of 17 from the field and led all scorers with 25 points.
Fountain Valley 60, Pasadena 47--Brent Martin scored 9 of his game-high 23 points in the third quarter as the Barons outscored Pasadena, 19-10, in that period to break up a close game at Fountain Valley. Martin also had seven rebounds for Fountain Valley (9-4). Simon Thomas added 11 points and Carlos Briceno added 10. Tommy Bryant led Pasadena with 16 points.
Brea-Olinda 52, Sunny Hills 46--The Wildcats rebounded from a disappointing, 55-52, loss to Mission Viejo in their tournament earlier this week to improve their record to 10-4. Guard Tony Barcelo scored all seven of his points in the second quarter as the Wildcats opened a 24-18 lead at halftime.
Brea made only 18-of-47 field goal attempts (38%), but outrebounded the Lancers, 38-26. Kevin Walker scored 14 points and had 11 rebounds while teammate David Fox had 19 points and 9 rebounds. Guard Eric Jones had seven assists.
Mission Bay 67, San Clemente 59--The Tritons got off to a slow start and never recovered en route to the Buccaneers’ eighth win of the season against three defeats. San Clemente was outscored, 14-7, in the first period and by halftime, was behind 33-23. Mike Rogers led the Buccaneers with 20 points, Juan Ruiz scored 16, and John Cheatham 10. Gary Wade scored a game-high 25 points in the losing effort for San Clemente.
Ocean View 73, Lakewood 54--Center sophomore Ricky Butler and senior guard Mike Labat combined for 32 points to lead Ocean View to a win at Ocean View.
