Finnish distance runner Martti Vainio, who finished second in the Olympics 10,000-meter final last summer before being disqualified when it was found he had taken anabolic steroids, has been stripped of his national 5,000- and 10,000-meter titles and a 15-kilometer cross-country title by the Finnish Athletics Assn.
The association said it will not count any of Vainio’s performances since last April 14. Vainio thus has also been deprived of the 5,000-meter national record he set at Oslo last June.
An Olympic spokesman said that Vainio has not returned his silver medal, which the International Olympic Committee ruled should go to British runner Mike McLeod, who finished third.
