Dole Spends 1st Day as Airline Overseer Hunting Lost Bag
WASHINGTON — The bag Eastern Air Lines lost on New Year’s turned out to belong to the person newly invested with authority over such matters: Transportation Secretary Elizabeth Hanford Dole.
The Civil Aeronautics Board officially went out of business Tuesday and all its functions were transferred to the Transportation Department.
The day Dole took on the responsibility for consumer protection regulations is the same day she became a consumer with a complaint.
A department spokesman said Dole and her husband, Sen. Robert J. Dole (R-Kan.) checked four bags on the Eastern Air Lines plane in Miami. But when they arrived in Washington, there were only three.
The spokesman said Eastern found the stray bag Wednesday.
