A 64-year-old woman who was a double amputee confined to a wheelchair died in a fire from which she could not escape, officials reported. Despite efforts of a neighbor to reach her, the victim was trapped in her home in the 7400 block of South Avalon Boulevard in Southeast Los Angeles. Los Angeles Police Sgt. Terry Fessler said the victim’s son had left the house and returned 15 minutes later to be told of his mother’s death. She was identified as Ora Towner. The fire apparently started near the victim, Los Angeles City Fire Department spokesman Larry Ford said, adding that the blaze appeared to have been accidental.
