Motorist Beaten by Crowd in N.Y. After Auto Kills Woman
NEW YORK — A motorist beaten by a crowd after he allegedly ran down and killed a 31-year-old woman was listed in stable condition Monday at Harlem Hospital, officials said.
The condition of the driver, Juan Soto, 46, of Newark, N.J., was upgraded from serious, a hospital official said.
Police said a cab driver cut off Soto’s car about a block from the scene of the accident Sunday night. The angry crowd, which included Ersel Lee, the boyfriend of the victim, Cynthia Atkins, converged on Soto and began beating him, police said. Lee was arrested and charged with assault.
Soto was charged with vehicular homicide, driving while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident.
