A man shot his roommate to death, held police at a standoff for four hours, then apparently killed himself in the backyard of his home in Concord. About two dozen policemen surrounded the home after neighbors reported that a man had been shot in front of the house. Police heard several shots, sealed off surrounding streets in the community east of San Francisco and warned residents to stay indoors. After four hours, police fired dozens of tear gas pellets into the home and, failing to get a response, stormed the building and found the body of Kenneth G. Mohar, 39, in the backyard. The roommate, who had been shot several times in the back, was identified as Steven Ray Dayton 27. Investigators said the motive was unclear.
