In Springfield, Mass., Santa Ana Mater Dei gave Coach Gary McKnight his state-record 844th career victory with a 79-71 win over Hyattsville (Md.) DeMatha in the Hoophall Classic.
McKnight becomes the winningest basketball coach in state history. The Monarchs improved to 16-1 this season and were led by UCLA-bound Tyler Lamb, who scored 23 points, made nine of 14 shots and had 11 rebounds.
McKnight has coached for 28 years and has a career record of 844-77.
Last week, on the verge of getting the record, McKnight said, ‘It means we’ve had a lot of good players for a lot of years. I really enjoy what I’m doing. I go to work with a smile on my face.’
