Some things in Southern California just never seem to change. Traffic is going to cause headaches and heart attacks. People are going to care about the Lakers whether they’re vying for NBA titles or last place in the Western Conference.

And El Segundo’s baseball team is going to make the playoffs. The Eagles closed in on the 42nd playoff berth in Coach John Stevenson’s 50th season this afternoon with an 8-0 victory over South Torrance at John Stevenson Field.

Nigel Nootbar pitched a one-hit shutout for El Segundo (20-8 overall, 6-3 Pioneer League), which broke a three-way tie for second place in the league with South Torrance (16-11, 5-4) and North Torrance.

Nootbar struck out four, walked three and hit one batter. South Torrance didn’t get a hit until Dylan Tubin hit an infield single leading off the sixth. The Spartans had four runners reach scoring position.

Logan Erickson went three for three with a homer, double and two runs batted in and Ben Doucette hit a solo homer and a run-scoring double for the Eagles. El Segundo closes the regular season at South Torrance on Thursday.
