Some batting averages are great.
A few are gaudy.
One is downright intergalactic.
Chris Smith, a senior outfielder at Compton-Centennial, is hitting .725. No, that’s not a typo.
Do the math. Smith has 29 hits in 40 at-bats and is leading the nation in hitting, according to MaxPreps.com. He also has 14 extra-base hits (six homers, six doubles and two triples). In three games this season, he has had four hits; in one game, he had five.
Perhaps most staggering, Smith has not struck out in 45 plate appearances.
