Some Orange County things that were worth watching over the weekend:
- Esperanza gained 419 yards -- all rushing -- and defender Nick Benvenuto knocked down a pass in the end zone as time expired in a 30-24 Sunset League victory over Los Alamitos. One of the county’s great rivalries goes down to the wire … again.
- Johnny McEntee of Servite was 12 of 12 for 155 yards with two touchdowns, and he also rushed for a score in the Friars’ 31-13 Trinity League victory over St. John Bosco. That, and Mater Dei loses. Talk about a perfect day for Friars fans.
Chris Morales of La Habra passed for three touchdowns in a 56-0 Freeway League victory over Buena Park. Talk about working quickly, his first two passes of the game went for touchdowns of 33 and 63 yards. Unable to convert three two-point point-after attempts, Fullerton was beaten, 22-20, by Troy. Now they’re tied with each other -- and Sonora -- for second place in the Freeway League. Xavier Mitchell of Bolsa Grande carried 23 times for 162 yards and four touchdowns -- three in the fourth quarter -- in a 28-21 Garden Grove League victory over Westminster La Quinta. Bolsa gets off the schneid in league, while La Quinta still looks for its first win. Parker Thompson of University threw two touchdown passes in a 27-20 Pacific Coast League victory over Corona del Mar. Beckman is all that stands between the Trojans and a perfect regular season. Brandon Snook of Santa Ana Calvary Chapel carried 34 times for 182 yards and scored twice in a 23-12 victory over Laguna Beach. With this victory, all four Orange Coast League teams now have a victory: Estancia is 5-4, and Calvary Chapel, Costa Mesa and Laguna Beach have one victory. Allan Bridgford of Mission Viejo passed for 282 yards and two touchdowns in a 42-14 South Coast League victory over Capistrano Valley. What’s the chance of this victory finally bringing an end to the talk about the tie with San Clemente? -- Martin Henderson
