Forget that Mater Dei quarterback Matt Barkley (pictured left) was intercepted for only the second time in four games Friday in the first quarter against Edison. It was his 43-yard touchdown pass to Robbie Boyer that left a feeling of awe in terms of arm strength and potential as a quarterback. It put Mater Dei on top, 14-0, in the first quarter.
Then Barkley came back to fire an 11-yard TD pass to Anthony Abbott. He now has 16 TD passes and counting. It’s 21-0 Mater Dei.
I’m feeling sorry for Edison QB Nick Crissman, who has no time to pass and has been sacked twice already. With 1:19 seconds left in the first quarter, Crissman just took a tremendous hit from Robert Mojica while trying to release the ball. He’s down, the game is halted and Edison medical personnel are trying to aid him.
Crissman, who has a possible concussion, was helped off the field. On the next play, backup QB Matthew Viles had his pass intercepted by Mojica, who returned it to the four. Barkley threw his third TD pass of the first quarter, a six-yarder to Boyer, and it’s 28-0. Bring on Corona Centennial.
