The public address announcer at the game between Torrance and West Torrance did a good job -- unbeknownst to him -- of answering my question, almost as soon as I thought it to myself.
Why is there a black-cherry colored 1934 Chevy pickup truck and a shiny 1925 Brunn Lincoln Sport Phaeton -- OK, I’ll admit I didn’t actually know what that second vehicle was; I had to ask classic-car afficionado Ernie Foster, who was sitting in the back seat of it -- parked on the track surrounding the football field?
The vintage cars, it turned out, were there to promote the third annual Torrance High School Classic and Custom Car and Motorcycle Show, scheduled to take place at the school from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Oct. 13.
All proceeds will go toward funding extracurricular activities.
As nice as they were, however, those wheels had nothing on those of West Torrance running back Brian Baucham.
Baucham scored four times in the first half, capped by his best impression of Reggie Bush on a cross-field cutback return of 88 yards on a punt with 23 seconds left that gave the Warriors (2-0) a 35-0 halftime lead on Torrance (2-1).
The 5-foot-11, 170-pound senior also scored on a 33-yard run in the first quarter and on runs of 19 and 9 yards in the second.
